The Pain-Free Fitness Method™ is Conquer’s proprietary training philosophy — developed by Dr. John Dougherty, DPT over 20+ years in fitness and clinical practice, and refined across 7+ years and six DFW locations training adults 40+.

Every prospective member gets a complimentary one-on-one consultation with a Studio Director — before signing up for anything. This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s the foundation of everything we do.

  1. Deep-dive conversation

    Your director sits down with you and goes through your goals, exercise history, injury history, and any medical concerns. We need to know where you’ve been before we can map where you’re going.

  2. Movement screen — five foundational exercises

    You’re taken onto the floor and coached through the five exercises that form the backbone of every Conquer program: Squat · Lunge · Shoulder Press · Chest Press · Deadlift. Your director assesses your movement patterns in real time, makes corrections on the spot, and explains exactly why.

  3. Education, not just correction

    For every movement, you learn what people commonly do wrong, why the correct pattern matters — both for injury prevention and performance — and what muscles it’s actually working. You leave knowing more than most people who’ve trained for years.

  4. Proof of concept

Dr. Dougherty’s clinical background isn’t just a credential — it’s baked into every training protocol at Conquer. All coaches are trained in the Certified Pain-Free Specialist program, ensuring they can confidently work with adults navigating aches, injuries, and mobility limitations.

    As we age, movement patterns degrade and muscles stop firing in the right sequence. The Pain-Free Fitness Method™ retrains these patterns before loading them — the same principles applied in elite orthopedic physical therapy.

  2. Joint-sparing load progressions.

    Tendons and cartilage respond to load differently than muscle. Our progressions are calibrated to drive muscle adaptation without exceeding the tolerance of connective tissue — critical after 40.

  3. Hormonal awareness.

    Recovery windows, muscle protein synthesis rates, and cortisol responses all shift with age. Our programming accounts for this — intensity is timed and dosed differently than it would be for a 25-year-old.

John got his personal training certification at 19 as a college freshman at the University of Maryland — fitness wasn’t a late pivot, it was always the plan. He graduated with a degree in Kinesiology, then earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy from George Washington University in 2014.

Over the next five years, John built deep clinical expertise diagnosing and treating injuries, aches, and pain — ultimately earning his Board Certification as a Clinical Specialist in Orthopedics, a distinction held by fewer than 6% of all physical therapists in the country.

In January 2019, he opened Conquer Fitness in Frisco, combining everything he’d learned in the clinic and the gym to serve the population nobody else was serving: adults over 40 who are busy, beaten up, and ready to feel strong again. Seven years later, Conquer operates six DFW locations with 600+ five-star reviews and a mission to reach 100 locations nationwide.
